On a dark and stormy day, a rose gray coated horse stands in long dry grass. Wearing Native American war paint, this is an Indian pony, a war horse painted for battle. The latest band of rain has passed through and mists rise from the ground. Overhead moody dark clouds fill the sky. The powerful mustang watches as they drift by, the wind picking up its mane and tail. Behind it, a few dark spruce trees line the field.
The markings on the horse have a variety of meanings:
For keen senses, it has the sun painted around its eye.
Because he has brought his rider back unharmed from battle, there is a hand print on its side.
A red cross means that it escaped an ambush.
The fire arrow on its neck to cause harm to its foes.
The zigzagged lines are lightning to give the horse energy.
The blue dots are hail to rain down upon enemies.
A symbol for a snake is on its hind leg, and above that, blue horses for captured mounts.
From the artist: I find rose gray to be a bit of a challenging coat to work with. While I like the warm coloration, it tends to be very middle tone, making it hard to for the horse pop against the background. To remedy this, I decided to set the scene very dark. Of course, I like the weather to play a part in a lot of my work. So, setting it in those moments just after a severe storm seemed like a natural choice.
Thanks for looking,
Daniel
