This is a print from one of my oil pastel drawings.
In northeast Georgia, particularly around Winder and Jackson County, “the Wog” (also known as Georgia’s Wog) is a cryptid legend. It’s said to reside near Nodoroc, also called the “Gateway to Hell”, a bog near Winder. Descriptions from local lore have the Wog as a jet-black, wolf or bear like creature about the size of a small horse. Its front legs are longer than its hind legs, giving it a “sitting on its tail” posture. It supposedly has a long tail tipped with a white puff that it swings back and forth—producing a detectable swishing sound. Other striking features include glowing red eyes, a forked tongue, and a bear-like head with tusked teeth
The Wog was believed to guard Nodoroc and potentially drag victims into the waters, eating carrion or possibly living beings. Early settlers even reported that it roamed near cabins at night. The site was a natural mud vent near Winder, GA, steeped in lore. According to Creek oral tradition, it was used for executions, and legend says it bubbled and smoked like "gateway to hell".
From the artist: This is my depiction of a local legend. I went to UGA to study art back in the 1990s. Coming from the Metro Atlanta area, I would take highway 316 to get to Athens. One of the towns I would pass by would be Winder, GA. Little did I know at the time, but that apparently was the location of Nodoroc…right next to the road I was driving on. Apparently today, the bog has dried up and the land is really just typical east Georgia woods. Though I driven by it dozens of times, I’d never hear of the Wog until recently when reading about Georgia cryptids.
