This is a print from one of Daniel's oil pastel works.
The Nemean Lion is a creature from Greek mythology, most famous for being one of the challenges that the hero Heracles (Hercules) faced during his Twelve Labors. This lion was said to have skin so tough that it was impervious to weapons like swords, spears, and arrows. According to myth, the lion terrorized the region of Nemea, killing anyone who tried to pass through.
In the first of his Twelve Labors, Heracles was tasked with slaying the Nemean Lion. Since no weapon could pierce its hide, Heracles had to wrestle the lion and eventually killed it by strangling it with his bare hands. Afterward, Heracles skinned the lion using its own claws and wore the impenetrable hide as armor, which became a key part of his iconic image.
The Nemean Lion is often depicted in ancient Greek art and literature as a symbol of immense strength and an insurmountable challenge, representing the idea of conquering something impossible through sheer force and ingenuity.
From the artist: Big cats are one of my favorite themes in art. Usually I go for realism, but, for this one, I wanted a more expressive artwork, so I adopted a more impressionistic style.
